Maintaining your garden in the Winter

Hints and tips for maintaining your garden during the winter season. From frost protection fleeces to weed suppressing membrane.

Winter Plant Frost Protection

Maintaining a beautiful garden is difficult in the winter. Plant frost protection is the only way to keep a healthy garden in this period.

To growing plants that can specifically withstand the frost is one way of doing this. But if you really are in love with your summer plants a plant frost protection fleece might be the best solution.

Aplant frost protection fleece is extremely light, wraps around most plants and allows air, moisture and light through.

Weed Suppressing Membrane in the Winter

Weed Control Fabric only lets water and nutrients through to your plants, whilst suppressing the growth of nasty unwanted weeds. Using weed membrane also helps to keep the ground moist and protects from extreme temperatures, whilst reducing the need for watering plants.

Weed control fabric is ideal for use under decorative gravel, bark, patios, driveways and decking.

Weed suppressing membrane will control the growth of your weeds in any season while allowing air and water to penetrate it.

When installed properly, a weed suppressing membrane can control your weeds for up to five years.

Install it by first removing all weeds from the area, including pulling out as many roots as possible.

All sharp objects must also be removed to avoid puncturing the weed suppressing membrane. Now you can start laying it down and cutting the appropriate length, allowing the sheets to overlap by around three or four inches.

Cover your existing plants with the landscaping fabric, use a knife to make a slit to allow yourself room to push your plants’ main stems through the fabric. Cut an X where you intend to plant new seeds in preparation to dig a hole when the time comes.

After trimming and securing the edges – roughly every 10 inches – check for gaps. Gaps may allow for weed growth.

Cover your landscape fabric with two or three inches of mulch to improve its appearance.

Organic mulch is usually more attractive, although it will eventually break down and actually promote more weed growth.

Dealing with Snow in the Garden

There are some benefits of snow to a garden – it actually acts as an insulator, protecting plants from the cold and frost.

A heavy layer of snow can cause leaves and branches to break – so when snow arrives you need to know how to deal with it.

Shaking excess snow from the branches, shrubs and hedges, will stop them from becoming disfigured because of the weight.

Removing heavy deposits of snow from the roofs of greenhouses or cold frames to let in the light and prevent the structures from bending under the weight.

Lengths of string can support branches of conifers. This will stop them being pulled out of shape.

Walking on snow-covered grass will not only damage the turf beneath and leave marks on the lawn but it helps the growth of fungal diseases – which thrive in the cool damp conditions.

Landscape fabric can have multiple uses in that it can protect the ground from snowfall.

However, following these steps is the best way to ensure your garden is prepared for the snow.

10 Tips for Pest Control in Winter

Like humans and animals, pests also prefer the warm indoors compared to the cold outdoors. Many people fail to understand that their warm homes can in fact become the perfect breeding grounds for vermin and once they get inside, they will multiply to create a dangerous habitat in your home. So here are 10 tips that can help control pests during winter.

1. Use Plastic Containers: Always pack edible items and other household items in plastic containers or covers. Do not use cardboard or paper bags because these provide a comforting place for insects to hide in. They are also easily penetrable.

2. Dispose Off Garbage: Keep garbage sealed in air tight bags and have them disposed off regularly. Dump the garbage bag in the bin outside your home instead of keeping it in the kitchen.

3. Mesh Screens: Cover all openings, including windows, doors, chimney vents etc with fine mesh screens. The will prevent pest infestation while also insuring your home gets the ventilation that it needs.

4. Fix Wall Cracks: Check your home meticulously for any wall cracks or holes that are potential living areas for bugs. Most importantly check the areas surrounding water pipes and other fittings as with time the moisture around the pipes cause cracks and attracts all kinds of crawlers. Seal the cracks and mend any openings.

5. Clean Cabinets: Every once a month, clean wooden furniture and cabinets as these are the places that crawlers love to live in. You must pay special attention to kitchen cabinets and bathroom furniture and any corner of the home that is dark and warm. Spray the cupboards with pesticide and make sure there’s no spider web or eggs lying around.

6. De-Clutter Your Home: A cluttered home is a bug’s paradise. These creatures simply love cramped furniture and household items which is why the attic is also one of their favorite places. Throw away unneeded boxes, old clothes, furniture and newspapers or books. Keep your home neat, clean and clutter free. If there’s no place for them to hide, they wouldn’t be interested in invading your home!

7. Pet Cleanliness: Keep your pet as well as your pet’s abode clean and hygienic. Do not let them litter around and always wash pet food dishes daily. Store all pet food in air tight containers and wash their bed or blanket frequently.

8. Clean Up the Yard: Litter, trash and soil or garden debris are attractive for insects. Do not let mulch or weeds get near your home’s foundation and mow the lawn frequently. Keep your garden or backyard clean.

9. Use Pest Repellant: Keep a repellant handy and spray it weekly to prevent pests from entering or residing in your home.

10. Call an Expert: If despite manual efforts you cannot curb this problem at home, then you should seek professional pest control services. Call in experts to make your home pest free and a healthy abode.

You don’t have to wait for winter to take up these preventive measures. Perform these throughout the year and hopefully your home would be clear from all kind of insects and bugs.

Which Wonderland?

If you’re looking for something to do over the festive break, there are many heritage sites and public gardens that over the winter months pay a particular attention to Christmas and seasonal themes. The biggest frequenter of the headlines this year has of course been Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, but below you’ll also find four other sites we deemed worthy to mention in the same breath.

However, let’s kick off with the big one itself:

1. Hyde Park aka Winter Wonderland
Less devoted to the theme of horticulture as it is to catering to our Christmas spirit, Hyde Park’s winter coat is highly focused on entertainment for a variety of ages and wears the badge of a Christmas carnival. Having found time to visit this year, I can safely confirm this as the most family-friendly spot on our list, complete with carousel, two ferris wheels and a myriad of novelty food stands, the park provides a welcome break for a parent shopping or a child shopped for. Also great for any relatives visiting from outside the city.

2. Tamworth Snowdome
The Snowdome, located just north-east of Birmingham, provides year-round ski and snow board facilities however at this auspicious time of year they transform the dome into Santa’s wonderland. The host of attractions includes authentic reindeer and a purpose built grotto complete with a giant Christmas tree, all this as the finale to your walk in the enchanted forest amid real snowfall.

3. Brighton Pavilion Ice Rink
Having visited the Pavilion earlier in the year, I would strongly recommend this site as an all-day event, after taking a grand tour of one of England’s most beautiful palaces you can slip on a pair of skates and enjoy the frozen sea breeze on ice. An hours session comes in at a pricy 13 per person however this can be justified by the stunning views you’ll be able to enjoy whilst skating, or the clear sky should you fall over!

4. Osborne House
This little gem hearkens back to the days of Scrooge and Tiny Tim, as a diorama of Victorian England and Christmas time and also an attraction to those interested in royal history, as it was once the private retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The normal run of Orsborne is that of a Victorian restoration, but this is adjusted for the festive season annually.

5. Oxford
Being more of a city wide event, Oxford is famous for its dedication to the ornate and the festive, the whole town is aglow with a procession of lantern light, huge scale choirs and a small scale festival in the ilk Edinburgh’s eponymous celebrations that includes playhouses and museums not to mention Oxford Castle.

Choosing the right type of outdoor furniture does require special thought, as it needs to be able to withstand prolonged exposure to all types of weather. Common materials such as pine, cedar and mahogany are often used to manufacture outdoor furniture, however more often than not they are unable to stand up against the passage of time. Teak wood is the most versatile and suitable choice for your outdoor setting as it is not only a very attractive material but hold ups extremely well in all types of weather, giving it a longevity that outstrips other woods.

Exported all over the world, teak contains a host of outstanding properties that make it the best choice for teak tables, chairs, and deck and patio furniture. The ability to resist rot is just one of the benefits of teak. Used for many years in the creation of sailing vessels, teak does not decay when repeatedly exposed to water, and will not warp or crack due to extended sun exposure. Known for its golden hue, teak will gently fade over time to a silvery tone without losing its opulent texture or durability.

If you’re entertaining runs more too big family gatherings a large teak table that will comfortably seat eight is a better option, and if you increase that gathering to include friends, why not purchase a teak table that can be extended to seat twelve. If a small garden oasis is what you want to furnish, try a low teak coffee table or small teak folding table that will provide you with just the right spot to put up your feet or enjoy a glass of something cold while you admire your garden.

Teak, while very luxurious, is also very hardy and therefore suited not just to those elegant and intimate entertaining areas but also to a more rough and tumble environment. Add a touch of class and practicality to your next beach vacation or camping trip with a folding teak table and chairs. Of course if your entertaining needs are constantly changing, try a versatile solution that allows you to change your teak table to accommodate your every requirement. The 3-in-1 teak table comfortably seats twelve people but can be shortened to more intimately seat 6 – 8 guests, and the sections removed, which host folding legs, can then be used to create a separate smaller table if necessary.

The glorious rich, warm tones of teak make any table a standalone success, however teak’s versatility and natural elegance also means it can be combined with other materials to provide an entirely different look to suit your individual taste. Glass or marble insets in your teak table create a style that reflects your own personality or may work to enhance your already existing outdoor dcor. Choose a steel base to support a teak table top for a more modern look, or add a teak umbrella to complete the setting.

Hydroponics 101 – Easy Plants to Grow

You are starting out your garden for the first time. You’ve prepared your garden bed, purchased the tools you will need, and you are wearing your gardening clogs around the house to break them in. You are on your way, fellow gardener! However, the next step is to grow. The great thing is, as a first time gardener, there are lots of plants to choose from. Sunflowers, the morning glory, and nasturtiums are some flowers that are easy to grow. Sunflowers and nasturtiums have large seeds and germinate very quickly. The morning glory may take a little effort to get going, but they are incredibly vigorous once fully grown.

Sunflower seeds are sold in almost every gardening store. Purchase some seeds, and plop some of them into a damp paper towel. The ones that germinate can be planted directly into the ground after the frost has passed. The seeds should be about 12 inches apart, and rows should be spaced about 2-3 feet apart. In about 5-10 days you should see seedlings.

Nasturtiums grow well with a little neglect. They are easy to grow, so they are usually started from seed. They can be sown directly into the garden when the soil is warm. Maintenance consists of weekly watering. Deadheading is not necessary, nor is fertilizer.

The morning glory plants are also sown from seed. They germinate quickly, and can fill a trellis or a fence in a flash. They can grow up to 15-20 feet during the gardening season. Sow Morning Glory seeds early in the season and water thoroughly after planting. Plants should be spaced about 6 inches apart. They do not require much maintenance part from a little fertilizer once a month and full sunlight.

If you want to grow some vegetables, there are many to choose from. One of the easiest plants to grow, even in a hydroponics garden, is the cress. These are usually grown indoors in flat containers. They grow very quickly, and if you have children, will be fun for them to grow in egg shells. Another great vegetable to grow are peppers. Both hot and bell are relatively easy to grow from seeds, and they can even grow in shady areas. Tomatoes are another great plant to grow. They are hardy, can be grown from seed outdoors or indoors, and even survive transplanting fairly well. Seeds will germinate in about a week.

Gardening for the first time may seem like a daunting task, but with a little time and tender loving care, you can cultivate a beautiful (and edible) garden- indoors and outdoors- in no time. There are many resources for first time gardeners, and many plants to choose from.
